These lessons here are in order of my personal preference.

  1. The LDS lesson manual can be found at  http://library.lds.org/nxt/gateway.dll/Curriculum/sunday%20school.htm/new%20testament%20gospel%20doctrine.htm#JD_35681ttl

  2. Mike Tueller has asked me not to post his lessons ( the best of the group by far ).  That is his choice, and I will honor that choice.  I am saddened that they will no longer be available.  If you have questions, you can reach him at mike_tueller@byu.edu <mike_tueller@byu.edu>.  His 1999 lessons are in a download zip packet that can be found ( as of today, October 20, 2003 ) at http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~tueller/sunday/arch/1999/schedule.html   Note that some of his links are out-of-date ( he explains on his site that he no longer maintains the pages ), but that his lessons are the best around.  It is not known if, in the future, he will have his own site, or authorize mirror sites.  If he does authorize mirror sites, I will gladly host them.

  3. Ted Gibbons:   http://www.ldsliving.com/nt1.asp  is his first lesson, http://www.ldsliving.com/nt22.asp is his 22nd.

  4. For a chapter by chapter look at the scriptures from an LDS viewpoint, see http://www.gospeldoctrine.com/NewTestament/ntindex.html  These are well done.  The best pointers to which LDS lessons use which scriptures is found at http://www.ldsgospeldoctrine.net/ .

  5. Meridian Magazines New Testament lessons can be found at http://www.meridianmagazine.com/gospeldoctrine/index.html

  6. Roma gives Jewish views on the New Testament lessons.  His index page can be found at http://www.israelrevealed.com/gospel/index.html

  7. Beardall:   http://beardall2000.com/gospdoct.shtml   Note that this is a general index page.

  8. Neumann Institute  http://www.neumanninstitute.org/  This is a very well done general index page.

  9. LDS Seminar has a series.  Lesson 1 can be found at http://www.cybcon.com/~kurtn/ldssemv3n01.txt .  See above for the index.  The last two digits are the lesson number.  This link is here just so the list is complete ( in other words, the others above are much better ).

The Doctrine and Covenants

  1. A good Doctrine and Covenants page can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lane/2536/dc_main.htm

  2. Another excellent site is http://www.dcsites.com/index.htm .  He has a lot of pictures and general information.  A very professional site.

  15. A Written Covenant, a document related to call of missionaries to the Lamanites, in sections 28 & 30.

  16. Testimony of Addison Everett on the Restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood

  17. Lectures on Faith, which were included in early editions of the Doctrine and Covenants.  They were included in the first real edition in 1835, and deleted in 1920.

  18. Doctrine and Covenants (Text)

  19. Book of Commandments, the attempt of collecting and printing the revelations.  The printing was not completed, but enough were saved from the destruction of the press in 1833 in Independence Missouri to make a few copies.

  20. Scott Norwood's Doctrine and Covenants pages contain the following:

D&C - Book of Commandments Comparison by Mirl Edwards

The Book of Mormon

  1. For DNA and the Book of Mormon, including the Murphy material, go here.

  2. Book of Mormon - Topic Searcher/Browser:  The Book of Mormon online with a search engine.

  3. Brant Gardner's Book of Mormon commentary is found at http://frontpage2000.nmia.com/~nahualli/commentary.htm   I am on a very good email list with him.

  4. FARMS - Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies.  This is mainly devoted to Book of Mormon studies.

  5. Jeff Lindsay - he is all apologetics all the time, but his site is a MUST site on many topics, including the Book of Mormon.

  6. Davidic Chiasmus and Parallelisms: Chiasmus is found in ancient Hebrew poetry.  It is also found in most other writings, including the Book of Mormon.  NOTE:  I am not impressed with such findings vis-à-vis the Book of Mormon. Chiasmus is also found in today's newspaper, in books, etc.  This is very overblown as Book of Mormon evidence.

  7. Book of Mormon changes - this non-Mormon sites lists some of the changes to the Book of Mormon over time.

  8. Chiasmus in the Book of Mormon

  9. Metal Plates and the Book of Mormon

  10. Kerry A. Shirts' "Mormonism Researched" Pages - back at last! One of my favorite apologetic LDS writers is back online, featuring loads of great research on the LDS scriptures and related topics.

  11. Ancient American - this magazine explores the archaeology of the Americas before Columbus, frequently offering evidence for transoceanic contact from the Old World. One recent issue (Vol. 4, No. 30), for example, has a cover story about a recent find in Illinois showing that Hebrews were on this continent 2000 years ago.

  12. The Tanners' Response (??) to the Arabian Geography in the Book of Mormon - Scott Pierson's valuable page on the topic

  13. DCP's Gospel Research Pages by D. Charles Pyle. This site tackles many anti-LDS arguments with sound logic and solid research. A valuable page on this site is Pyle's review of Marian Bodine's book, "Book of Mormon vs. the Bible (or common sense)". Includes a couple photos of relevant evidence.

  14. Bill Hamblin takes a swipe at trying to tell of how to look at the Book of Mormon problems at http://www.lightplanet.com/mormons/response/bom/Geography_Archaeology.htm  A valuable page

  15. Response to the Smithsonian Institution's 1996 Statement Regarding the Book of Mormon - Deals with the many sloppy statements made by a department at the normally quite reputable Smithsonian Institution - but made without the benefit of adequate scholarship about either Mesoamerica or the Book of Mormon. The Smithsonian Statement is embarrassingly out of date and needs significant revision. Many issues are covered, including transoceanic voyaging and allegedly missing items such as silk.

  16. Curse of the Cocaine Mummies - transcript of the 1997 Discovery Channel documentary showing strong evidence of ancient transoceanic trade between the Old and New Worlds.

  17. Chapman Research Group - offering interesting evidences for the Book of Mormon. See the article on horses.

  18. Where Did Nephi Build the Ship?" - an excellent article by Maurine and Scot Proctor about their journey to Wadi Sayq, a possible location for Bountiful in the Arabian Peninsula. Includes new photographs.

  19. LDSFAQ Index: Answers to Frequent Questions

  20. Arabia and The Book of Mormon - Cooper Johnson's excellent article at FAIRLDS.org, reviewing a presentation by S. Kent Brown.

  21. Ancient Scripts - A marvelous collection of information on scripts of the ancient world. The recently discovered Mesoamerican La Mojarra Script is a reminder of how little we know about Mesoamerica and how fast things are changing!

  22. Russell Anderson's Book of Mormon Page - includes discussion of a variety of evidences, including computer analysis of writing styles.

  23. Some Archaeological Outliers - a site with photos and information on the Bat Creek Stone (apparently written in an old Hebrew script) and other finds that challenge standard paradigms of archaeology.  Lindsay discusses the significant Bat Creek inscription Smithsonian Institution's 1996 Statement Regarding the Book of Mormon.

  24. The Los Lunas Stone: An Ancient Hebrew Inscription in New Mexico? - another controversial find that may be authentic.

  25. The Newark, Ohio Decalogue Stone and Keystone Interesting but controversial: are these stones with ancient Hebrew writing further evidence of ancient Jewish contact with the New World? The author provides helpful analysis of the finds.

  26. Book of Mormon Witnesses by Richard L. Anderson.

  27. Mounting Evidence for the Book of Mormon - an article in the January Ensign by Daniel C. Peterson.

  28. Ancient Mesoamerican Civilizations - a great resource by Kevin L. Callahan.

  29. LDSFaith.org - a great collection of resources and links for the Latter-day Saint.

  30. More Book of Mormon Evidences by Darell Thorpe, including citations about horses, cement, and so forth.

  31. The Golden Era of Mesoamerica - by Steven Jones, showing interesting Mesoamerican parallels with 4th Nephi in the Book of Mormon.

  32. Scott Norwood has a large group of links on many topics.  His Book of Mormon links are at http://www.geocities.com/scott_norwood/referenceshelf.html

The Bible

  1. Joseph Smith, Jun.'s INSPIRED VERSION of the BIBLE

  2. I will not attempt to recreate the many good Bible sites on this list.  One I use all the time is http://bible.gospelcom.net/bible?  Another site is http://bf.org/StudySites/bfstudy.php3#Menu

  3. The best page by far on anthropology and the Bible is my good friend Richley Crapo's.  It can be found at http://cc.usu.edu/~fath6/contents-bible.htm

  4. The Old Testament, and some of the new, is full of poetry.  To understand this poetry, Clark Goble, an LDS friend, wrote this piece.

  5. Before 1947, the oldest extant text of any of the books of what Christians call the Old Testament was dated approximately 800 CE ( AD ).  Then, the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.  They dated 200 BCE - 50 BCE or so, some 1000 years older.  A well done page on Isaiah in the Masoretic text ( pre-1947 ) and the famous 24 foot Qumrun Isaiah scroll can be found at Frank Moeller, Comments on Isaiah (Christian)

  6. The First Presidency has issued this statement on using the King James Version of the Bible.  My personal observation is that the King James version of the Bible is not readable by most Americans, and thus does not contribute to our understanding of the scriptures, and via that scriptural understanding, to an understanding of God.  I read other versions, and use the KJV when I teach.

The history of the Book of Abraham is very interesting.  A word of caution:  if you are Mormon, some of the information might be new to you.  The picture above on the right is Abraham and Isaac by Rembrandt.

Mormon Apologetic Sites

Non-Apologetic Sites

  1. http://www.religioustolerance.org/lds_bkab.htm - not a great site, but short, and apologetic.

  2. http://farms.byu.edu/studyaids/suggestedabraham.php - FARMS bibliography

  3. http://www.jefflindsay.com/LDSFAQ/FQ_Abraham.shtml - Jeff is all apologetics, all the time, but he at least tries to tackle the issues.

  4. The Lost Book of Abraham: Investigating a Remarkable Anti-Mormon Claim - a paper by Ben McGuire on the FAIRLDS.org Website that reviews an anti-LDS film entitled The Lost Book of Abraham: Investigating a Remarkable Mormon Claim. Excellent!

  5. Kerry A. Shirts' "Mormonism Researched" Pages - Kerry, like Jeff, is all apologetics all the time.  His site features loads of great research on the LDS scriptures, including the Book of Abraham, and related topics. See, for example, his article, "Abraham 3:13 - Shinehah - the Sun: Joseph Smith Shines Through on This One Also."

  6. Judging and Prejudging the Book of Abraham by Hugh W. Nibley

  7. The Book of Abraham Online at lds.org - includes Facsimile 1, Facsimile 2, and Facsimile 3.

  8. John Gee's review of Charles M. Larson's anti-Mormon book, By His Own Hand upon Papyrus: A New Look at the Joseph Smith Papyri, (Grand Rapids: Institute for Religious Research, 1992).

  9. Michael Rhodes' review of By His Own Hand upon Papyrus

  10. The Joseph Smith Hypocephalus: Seventeen Years Later by Michael D. Rhodes. This article provides an excellent discussion of Facsimile #2 and the amazingly reasonable commentary of Joseph Smith, which could not have been fabricated based on scholarly knowledge in the 1830s.

  11. The Book of Abraham and the Book of the Dead: Just What Is the Problem? - Chapter one of Hugh Nibley's book, Abraham in Egypt. Provided by the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies. FARMS phone number is 1-800-327-6715.

  12. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/2671/Abraham.html has a lot of good material

  13. Book of Abraham Articles - from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism.

  14. Abracadabra, Isaac and Jacob - by John Gee. Review of Edward H. Ashment's "The Use of Egyptian Magical Papyri to Authenticate the Book of Abraham: A Critical Review" in the FARMS Review of Books.

  15. A Critical Analysis of the Book of Abraham in Light of Extra-Canonical Jewish Writings - by Rabbi Nissim Wernick. Rabbi Wernick compares the extra-biblical details in the BofA to similar ideas found in extra-canonical Jewish writings for his dissertation.

  1. http://www.lds-mormon.com/abraham.shtml - This site is a very good, rather comprehensive site.  It contains pointers to many other sites.

  2. http://www.irr.org/mit/Books/BHOH/bhoh1.html - this is a very well done, but very problematic, book by Larson.  It does the most comprehensive job of examining the evidence, but is quite pointed in its anti-Mormon bias.  The complete book is online, and free.  And, troubling.  Reviews of this book can be found on the right of the page.

  3. http://www.mindspring.com/~engineer_my_dna/mormon/ - This site is not very well done, but is OK and contains some material not contained elsewhere.

  4. http://www.xmission.com/~research/about/abraham.htm - Marquardt is always challenging and direct.  For information on the Egyptian Alphabet and Grammar book created by Joseph Smith and his scribes, see http://www.xmission.com/~research/about/alphabet.htm also on Marquardt's site.

  5. http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/theism/mormonism/abraham.html - A rather complete list of lists of anti-Mormon papers about the Book of Abraham

  6. Book of Abraham Facsimiles by James David.  Photographs and images of the facsimiles. The facsimiles are now known have nothing to do with Abraham.  Also see his Book of Abraham Facsimiles No. 2 Altered and his Copies of Papyri which has Photocopies of various Joseph Smith papyri.  And, visit his Egyptian Alphabet and Grammar and Egyptologist's Views.

  7. Egyptology and the Book of Abraham (1993) by David P. Wright - "The Book of Abraham does not derive from Abraham and is apparently not historical." Moreover, "the book is not ancient but specifically the composition of Joseph Smith."
